NEW-LIST is a new mailing list announcement service. Thousands of people online subscribe to this list to receive email notifications of new Ezines and mailing lists. So, by posting to this list, you will immediately be telling thousands of prospective subscribers about your publication.

TOP TIP: Before sending your email to NEW-LIST please subscribe yourself first and see how other people announce their new Ezine or mailing list. This way you will be able to see HOW they promote it. You will also learn how NOT to do it as well!

It is important to make sure that your email is packed full of benefits for your potential subscribers. I cannot stress enough the importance of this. People will only subscribe if you can tell them in one short email, "What's in it for them!". This is quite a skill!

You need to be able to write a power packed headline, to draw your prospect into reading the rest of the Email, and follow that up with loads and loads of benefits. You are really creating a short, snappy classified ad! It is important to make sure you have an attention grabbing headline at the very top of your email.

Top Internet marketers will tell you that over 80% of people will only read the headline of an email. If it does not grab them straight away they will not read the rest of it! You must remember that anyone and everyone announces their Ezines to NEW-LIST. You need to make yours stand-out.

Step 2 - List your Ezine in all of the Newsletter Directories

Now that you have announced your Ezine to NEW-LIST subscribers the next step is to get it listed in all the important directories and databases. There are literally hundreds of listings and directories services on the Net. The difficult decision is to determine which ones are the most effective in attracting subscribers and therefore which ones you should submit your Ezine to. Step 3 - Announce your Ezine to the Newsgroups

Another way of reaching your target audience is to use Newsgroups. The original idea of a Usenet Newsgroup was to allow like-minded people to discuss a topic of interest to them and to get help. Unfortunately many of the groups are now nothing more than long lists of classified ads for "get-rich-quick" schemes.

Despite this situation it is still possible to pick up subscribers by posting sensibly to relevant Newsgroups.

What you should do is to join these Newsgroups:

alt.zines
alt.etext
and lurk for a while to see the types of postings that take place.

Once you feel comfortable you should then announce your Ezine to these lists, remembering to include a benefits loaded email message, how to subscribe, and your website address. Every time you send out a new issue you should also announce that in these Newsgroups and offer to send a free copy of the ezine to those that request it.

Step 4 - Link your Ezine to your Website

Now you have your Ezine listed in all the high-visibility places your next step is to link your Ezine to your website. A website is a great place for increasing your Opt-In Email list.

In fact your website should be focused on:

  1. Getting the email address of every visitor to your site
  2. Following up those visitors by emailing them with details of your product or service
  3. Selling them something!

Notice that number 3 in the list is selling to your visitors. This should be the last thing on your mind. Your first priority is to make your visitors feel comfortable in dealing with you, only then will they buy anything! You would be amazed at how few people fail to use their website to get subscribers to their ezine. All you need to do is to place a request for subscribers at (or near) the top of every web page. And we mean every page.

Do not simply place a message saying something like ".. subscribe to our Ezine now". You must briefly explain what your Ezine can do for your visitor. Remember "What's in it for them!". Pack the description full of benefits and make it easy for your visitors to subscribe by providing a box where they enter their email address and click a button saying "Subscribe me".

Alternatively you may use the services of what's known as a Listserver. This is a site that handles all of the subscribe and unsubscribe messages for you automatically. They also provide a mechanism by which you can send your Ezine to your subscribers on a regular basis.

If you are interested in this you can find listserver providers located at http://www.getpub.com/ezhost.htm. If you decide to use, or are already using a listserver, then you must provide a link to that server on all of your web pages alongside your benefits-packed invitation to subscribe!

In order to get people to subscribe from your website you will need people to visit it in the first place! One good way of doing this is to list your website with the following search engines and directories:

Yahoo!
AltaVista
InfoSeek
Excite
Lycos
HotBot
WebCrawler
Northern Light

Over 90% of your traffic will come from just these search engines so focus your effort on getting listed in the top 20 of each of these. If you do not know how to submit your website to each of these visit http://www.getpub.com/ezprom.htm and click on each search engine link you find there. These will take you to the submission forms for each service.

TOP TIP: Do not be tempted to buy a submission tool that will bulk submit your website to 200 or more sites. These will do your rankings more harm than good! Most search engines are changing to specifically exclude accepting submissions from such tools meaning your site may not be listed at all! Or worse still, you may be blacklisted and therefore not able to submit to them again. If you get this right, you should not need to submit to any other sites. We find that a good 80% of our visitors come from Yahoo! alone.

Another thing you should do is to get your Ezine listed under different categories at Yahoo! Do not just list it under "Ezines". Instead find a category that matches your subject and list it there also. This will appeal more to your target market and will help you to get better quality subscribers.

TOP TIP: Make sure you place each issue of your Ezine on a separate web page and submit each of those pages to the search engines as well. These pages will contain a concentration of keywords that relate to your subject and therefore should feature high in search results. You can also get new subscribers who find these pages in the search engines so make sure you include the ability to subscribe from each page. This works fantastically well.

Step 5 - Trade ads with other Ezines

Step 5 is a new development in Ezine promotion. It is now becoming more and more common for Ezine publishers to promote each others Ezines. What is the benefit to me of advertising other people's Ezines?

Well there are several benefits: Providing a service to your readers. By advertising Ezines that are related to the subject of yours helps your readers to quickly find more information about the subject. They will not forget the time you have saved them by not having to surf hundreds of sites on the Internet to find these publications.

They will advertise YOUR Ezine in theirs and bring more subscribers to you. This is particularly useful if your Ezine is new. By swapping ads with a more established and well-respected Ezine you can very quickly be seen as a quality publication. You advertise your Ezine for FREE! Need we say anymore!

Step 6 - Write articles for other Ezines

What! Me write articles ... you gotta be kiddin' ! No, we are not kiddin'. Take a look at those Ezines you are currently subscribed to. You will see articles by the same people, over and over again. Those people also happen to be the ones who have very successful Ezines (and online businesses!).

The main reason for writing your own articles is to get your name known. The more places your name is seen, the more chance there is that people will subscribe to your Ezine. When you write an article, always include a small section at the end which includes your name and how to subscribe to your Ezine. Most Ezine editors allow this in return for being able to use your article.

Make sure you write on the same topic that your Ezine covers so that you can refer to it throughout! Once you have written your article send it to the same publishers that you do your ad swaps with. This way you will get double exposure - once from your article, and again from your Ezine ad in the same issue.

Step 7 - Advertise Offline

Now that you have completed your online promotion and a steady stream of subscribers is being added to your Opt-In Email list, the final step is to advertise your Ezine (and business for that matter) offline. Why advertise offline? Where do I start? How do I do it? What will it cost? These are some of the questions that are in your mind now. Let's answer them for you.

Why advertise offline? The main reason is that people who respond to offline ads tend to be more serious purchasers and stand a better chance of buying something from you. They will improve the quality of your Opt-In Email list, which is more important than the size of your list, especially if you want to make money. To sell to people who find you online requires more contact, regular contact, and more effort to get the sale. This does not mean you cannot sell to people online, of course you can, it just takes longer. If you can find prospects offline who are almost ready to buy, your profits will increase substantially.

Where do I start? Firstly, make sure your Ezine subscription address and your website address are on all materials you send to customers and prospects. This will include letterheads, business cards, etc. Your addresses must be everywhere. Next, you should find newspapers and magazines that are local to you, and place classified ads in them. You can use the same power-packed classified ads you wrote when promoting your Ezine to NEW-LIST in Step 1.

What will it cost? Naturally, offline advertising is not free but then again a lot of online advertising isn't either! The cost of offline advertising will depend on where you advertise. Classified ads in magazines can cost as little as a few dollars write up to $100 and beyond. The costs will depend on the number of readers. The higher the readership, the higher the advertising costs generally.
